that Gwinnett County was named after an English immigrant merchant and planter who was in charge of Georgia's troops during the Revolutionary War and became one of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence?  That is right, the mysterious Mr. Button Gwinnett lived and attempted a couple of different businesses ventures in the Savannah area in the mid 1700's before joining the forces that were fighting for independence from England.

After the war and his subsequent signing the Declaration of Independence, Button Gwinnett came back to Georgia with political aspirations that led ultimately to his downfall and death!  After a series of events that caused Button Gwinnett to lose a run for Governor of Georgia in 1777, he challenged his political rival, Lachlan McIntosh to an "ultimate smack down". Both men challenged each others honor in a duel with pistols at 12 feet!  The bullets flew and both hit their marks, but McIntosh's shot was better placed than Gwinnett's and Button Gwinnett succumbed to his wound three days after the challenge.  Gwinnett died at the age of 42.

Forty years later the Georgia legislature honored Button Gwinnett's Revolutionary War service and courage by naming a then rural Georgia county Gwinnett County.  A statue of Button Gwinnett resides in prominence high above the Mall of Georgia.  So if you are at the mall and you wonder who the man with the can so high in the sky is, it is our own brave Mr. Button Gwinnett!
